Lyrebird Ridge Organic Winery and Retreat

Lyrebird Ridge Organic Winery and Retreat is a small organic winery situated on 40 acres of bush land only 20 minutes from Kangaroo Valley, 25 minutes to Berry and 20 minutes from Nowra. The winery has been in operation for 24 years with the first vines going in in 1994.Chambourcin has been our main varietal, due to its resilience to disease, essential when growing using organic practices. Over the years we have had many challenges however we continue to produce a small quantity of red wine and fortified wines for our cellar door and our guests.

Why are we a ‘Retreat’?

Coming to our property means having a break from the everyday connection to technology. There is no internet, phone or television reception in our accommodation. We find this helps people to unwind and relax for the duration of their stay. Of course, we can provide guests with the necessary facilities if needed, although we don’t reveal the ‘hot spot’ for your mobile unless requested.

Pet Friendly Accommodation

We are very happy to have you bring your pet along to the property, for a visit or a stay .Our resident pets are Molly, the Border Collie and Rosie May, a Golden Retriever. Both are very friendly and love sharing the property. Molly is the worker and Rosie is the social coordinator.

Sustainability and Environmental Initiatives

Our plan is to be as self- sufficient as possible for both our business and personal life.

Our electricity requirements are met by a substantial Solar Power System. We operate a generator if needed and our hot water and cooking is gas.

We use naturally fallen trees on our property to provide wood for slow combustion fireplaces in both our home and the guest accommodation.

Rain water tanks collect 70 000 litres of water for drinking and five dams provide irrigation for our vineyard, fruit trees and vegetable beds.

Compost and chickens dispose of any food scraps. Other recyclables are collected, sorted and removed to the local recycle centre.

Sheep provide a motor mower service outside the vineyard during Summer and Spring. During the cooler non- growth periods, the sheep graze in the vineyard. This helps not only keep the weeds and grass down but also allows for some fertilizer. Along with the chickens sharing the vineyard we find this combinations works beautifully to help keep the vineyard healthy.

Organic Chambourcin

The Chambourcin grape is suitable as a table grape, it is of hybrid heritage and well known for the strong colour and capacity to resist disease, making it ideally suited to organic wine making. Chambourcin is the main grape variety grown with tastings of our available vintages as well as our port available at our cellar door.

No chemicals, no preservatives

From vine to bottle, produced on our premises, our organic wine contains no chemicals and is spray and preservative free. High in anti-oxidants and with no known allergens it can be recommended as a healthier alternative to those preferring chemical free wine.

Our chickens are housed in mobile chicken tractors and are moved along the vinrows daily and let free range when we work in the vineyard. The vineyards are fenced and completely covered with netting to keep out kangaroos, wombats, birds and rabbits.

Forty acres of land provides an abundant range of birds and wildlife with the shy Lyrebird being glimpsed in the natural bush corridors running through the property. Take a torch and go spotlighting for wombats. There are lots of them around the property and they are out and about all year round.

There are five dams located around the property allowing for irrigation, fishing for silver perch, yabbying and swimming.

A covered BBQ area is ideally situated at the edge of a large grassed area, between the cellar door, overlooking a natural gully and the vineyards. Visitors and guests are welcome to utilise these facilities at any time during their stay.

Idyllic country holiday

Everything was perfect for a peaceful, relaxing weekend away! Accommodation was excellent, fully self contained, wood burner stove, breakfast and cooking materials provided, comfortable bed, board games, great DVD selection, toiletries, and really nice finishing touches like some crackers, cheese and homemade chutney and a little glass of port when we arrived! The location is also excellent, isolated and peaceful, yet only 15/20 min drive to a town! Complete freedom on the property, for us and our dog! Lots of farm animals and 2 lovely dogs who were very friendly! We also saw 5 wombats, which was a treat! Ann and Greg were very welcoming! Would thouroghly recommend! Loved our stay here!Joanna C, October 2017

Sometimes you need to get away from the normal everyday routine that is our lives, to take the opportunity to slow down, relax and leave technology behind. Lyrebird is the perfect place to do this and with the added bonus that I could bring my 4 legged best friend. With the close proximity of Kangaroo Valley, Berry, Kiama and Shoalhaven Heads there is a variety of options to choose from depending on whether you like to browse in quaint gift shops, eat beautiful meals, swim in clear refreshing rivers or hit the beach. Or of course, you can stay and relax and enjoy the bush, exploring around the property. Anne is a gracious host and made me feel very welcome and has fabulous knowledge of the area if you need any suggestions as to how to while away your time. And at the end of the day, what better way to relax than to share some time with other guests that may be staying in the one other cottage over a barbecue dinner. Lyrebird is the perfect place to get away from the mundane, to recharge and prepare yourself to tackle the real world for another round. Thank you Anne, for providing a beautiful escape. Megan T, January 2019
